I bought a little electric city-car from ZAP in October called the XEBRA. It's about $10k and designed to handle short city driving. It can go up to 40 MPH, so it is not designed for freeway use, but it fits perfectly into my commute, which is about 10-15 miles per day. People who do a lot of freeway driving probably could not own a car like this, but a multi-car family, small business, municipal or corporate fleet could probably help them save a lot of money and driving something that is friendlier for the environment. It's available now at.

Yes, there are cheap electric cars. Someday, all electric vehicles will be cheap - the construction of EVs is actually far simpler than comparable gas vehicles (electric motors have only ONE moving part.)
*
High profile EV launches are expensive for the same reason any new and radical product is expensive - the builders don't expect to sell very many, so the development costs have to be shared by fewer buyers. The costs will come way down when the products are accepted by the mass marketplace.
*
Remember when DVD players first came out, they cost almost $1000? Now you can buy one for under $50. The same thing will happen to EVs someday.
*
Having said that, though, there are a few interesting EVs out there, that aren't that expensive. Here's a Chinese import, due out next year. It gets 200 miles per charge - and costs $28,500:
*
*
Still too much? Here's a really cute little car - it doesn't go fast, but it costs only $10,000:
*
*
Can we do better than this? How about an EV that does freeway speeds, and costs as little as $5000? Info is on this page, look at the links at the bottom for the cheap cars:
*
*
Of course, for those prices, you get cars made out of used car parts (though the electric drive is made from new parts.) Is it possible to make ALL-NEW electric cars for prices like these?
*
Yes, it is. Here's a peek at the future - these cars are made by a Chinese company, who is looking for worldwide distributors. The prices on this page are for real, in American dollars:
