Yes. Electric cars will destroy the auto industry. Of course we will still need people to maintain the suspension and steering and stuff like that, but when a motor has one moving part instead of hundreds reliability goes through the roof and people loose their jobs. Why do you think GM destroyed the EV1? Why do you think Bonesman Bush never says anything about bicycles or public transit with respect to the fuel crisis?

if a cars electric it doesnt mean it does’t have nuts and bolts that need to be tightned, or huge metal pieces that will need replacing, it will still be a machine, not a huge computer

It’s a different set of skills, that’s for sure. The Fuel system, emission controls, and the engine itself must account for a pretty large fraction of car repairs. I DO NOT think electric cars will be as reliable as a refrigerator. People have been building them at home for 40 years, and they are very difficult to take care of. Particularly because the batteries are so finicky. A battery is a reactor where a reversible chemical reaction can take place over and over. It turns out there are a lot of things that go wrong in there.

If mechanics are thrown out of work, they can help build power plants. We’re going to need a lot more electricity if it all works. I am really looking forward to having an electric car.

the truth is the internal combustion engine is such a small part of what mechanics do. I know everyone hates mechanics and casts them out as charlatan, trust me I know how to work on my own car I have been working on cars for 20 years now. Even I sometimes want to take my car to a mechanic. But to answer your question the Utopia that you speak of will never happen because even now the car company’s have realized the value of “planned obsolesces”. Car company’s can make a car last longer, but why would they? We as people get tired and want the newest and best comfort features available. Can you live with the same car for 60 years? Things will always break on a car because of the biggest flaw in the design, it still requires a human to drive it.

Some will, some won’t.

When cars started hitting the road, they’re weren’t very reliable. When cars started becoming popular, many horse trainers were put out of business.

Things will always change. The world won’t end, with combustion engines.

the engines now, gas or electric could be that reliable but will never happen. too many companies have millions invested in the industry so vehicles are made to fail. an auto tech to stay in the industry will have to become hybrid certified to compete. a man invented a tire that would never go flat or lose its tred. Goodyear bought the rights and gave us the “run-flats”. like throw a dog a bone. we will never be able to enjoy the real rewards of technology because the system is designed to keep these huge companies in business.
a good tech today had to know electronics, thermodynamics, hecidecimal system (can comp.), math and formulas..etc…

not likely as the items manufactured years ago were built a lot more durable than their counterparts today. the electric car will be subjected to a lot of adverse conditions that most electric motors never see.

no they will still need to be repaired when a problem does occurre.
will still need stuf like brakes,batterys,tires,etc.
